For us, it's South Haven's local charm, expansive beaches, nearby parks, friendly people, and unique dining. In this travel guide, we have outlined all of the top things to do in South Haven, MI including all of the things we find unique about this spectacular beach town.

1. Kal-Haven Bike Trail


The Kal-Haven Bike Trail is known throughout Michigan as being one of the best bike trails in the state. Stretching 34 miles from South Haven to Kalamazoo, this crushed-stone nature path allows for biking, hiking, and snowmobiling. Winding through wooded forests, open farm-land and covered bridges, the Kal-Haven trail brings nature enthusiasts from throughout the state and beyond.

Trail & Parking Information

Completing the entire Kal-Haven Trail is 33.9 miles one-way with 387 feet in elevation gain. The trail is point-to-point and is rated as "easy" difficulty. Plan at least ten hours to complete the entire trail. To modify this trail as an out-and-back from South Haven, we recommend turning around at Grand Junction, which would lead to a 20-mile round-trip bike ride. 2. Black River Harbor Walk


The Black River runs from Lake Michigan through the town of South Haven and offers stunning waterfront views throughout downtown. Walking each side of the marina will allow for breathtaking views of the city's waterways, parks, piers, and charming historic sites. We found the north side, from Ellen Avery Park to the North Pierhead Light, to be far less crowded if you only have time to walk a portion of the marina.

3. South Haven Lighthouses


The South Haven Lighthouse draws crowds throughout all times of year. Follow the Black River from the downtown shops and you will soon embark on an expansive pier leading to the 1872 South Haven Lighthouse.


Opposite the South Haven Lighthouse on the north side of the Black River is a parallel pier, leading out to the North Pierhead Light. Used for both fishing and sightseeing, walking these piers and enjoying the beautiful coastal views is one of the top things to do in South Haven.


Warning: Use caution when walking out onto these piers and do not walk out to the lighthouse when the tides are high.

4. North and South Beaches


South Haven has some of the best beaches you can find along Lake Michigan with white powdery sand, expansive shorelines, and views of picturesque lighthouses in the backdrop. The most popular beach known as South Beach, can be accessed via a short walk from the downtown shops. South Beach has nearby restrooms, parking, splashpad, and concessions.

North Beach also offers a playground, parking, and concessions. Depending on your lodging location and preference, both beaches are a fantastic option in South Haven. North Beach offers a bit more seclusion, as it is a slightly longer walk from downtown activities. Head even farther north to Dyckman Street Beach Access for the least amount of crowds.

5. Stanley Johnston Park


This hidden gem of a park is located on the north side of the Black River. The large open space is located on a hill, providing magnificent views of the downtown and port. A peaceful setting with towering trees and blooming florals, Stanley Johnston Park is an oasis within the city.

6. Old Harbor Village


Old Harbor Village is filled with shops, dining, and historic buildings located alongside the Black River. Take a stroll through this lively street, shop for souvenirs, and grab a drink to enjoy in an outdoor patio.

7. Downtown Shops & Eateries


The downtown streets of Phoenix and Center are filled with local charm. Stroll through several blocks of art galleries, artisan shops, boutiques, bookstores, and markets. Stop into a café or bakery for a delicious treat or sit down for a meal in one of South Haven's delicious eateries.

8. Michigan Maritime Museum


The Michigan Maritime Museum offers exhibits on the history of South Haven maritime, as well as, the greater Great Lakes region. In addition, the museum also offers boat tours on a variety of impressive ships and numerous educational events throughout the season

The Michigan Maritime Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm (last admission at 3pm). Adult admission is $10 (summer) and $12 (winter) with on-the-water boat tours ranging from $20 - $42 per passenger.

In order to make the most of the breathtaking Lake Michigan beaches located in South Haven, we recommend visiting during the warmer months of June - September. However, depending on your desired activities, there is still much to explore in the winter months including snowmobiling on the Kal-Haven trail.
