Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early fall offers the best weather for outdoor activities. May and September provide smaller crowds and lower prices while maintaining comfortable temperatures. We would recommend avoiding July and August due to the biting stable flies on the beaches!

Getting There

Fly into Marquette County Airport (MQT) or drive to Munising, MI. Driving is typically more budget-friendly and gives you flexibility to explore.

Where to Stay on a Budget

Choose from these affordable options as a couple:

  • Camping at Pictured Rocks Campgrounds ($20-30/night)

  • Holiday Inn along Lake Superior ($100-150/night)

  • This cozy vacation rental studio in Munising for around $100/night (2025)

Choose from these affordable options as a group:

  • Glamping in a Yurt at the Paddlers Village - Sleeps 5-8 ($199/299/night)

  • These downtown vacations rentals that are perfect to share with another adventure couple (option 1 and option 2)

Day 1: Miners Castle, Waterfalls & Sunset Cruise

Morning: Exploring Miners Castle & Beach

For breakfast, we stopped at Falling Rock Cafe in Munising, which quickly became our favorite morning spot. Their coffee and homemade pastries were exactly what we needed to fuel our day of adventure. Pro tip: grab a spot by the window for amazing Lake Superior views while you eat.

We then started our day at the iconic Miners Castle Point, one of the most photographed spots in Pictured Rocks. The colorful sandstone cliffs against Lake Superior's crystal waters were absolutely stunning - definitely worth getting here early to beat the crowds (we have pinned this location in our Michigan Google Map).

We spent some time at Miners Beach afterward, which turned out to be the perfect spot for a morning swim and some sun. After enjoying the beach without the crowds, we hiked the easy 1.2-mile Miners Falls Trail through a beautiful forest that led to a gorgeous waterfall.

Afternoon: Chasing Waterfalls

For lunch, we couldn't resist trying the famous U.P. pasties at Muldoons. These flaky, hearty pastries lived up to the hype - we definitely understand why they're a Michigan tradition! We followed lunch with a stop at the Grand Island Harbor Scenic Turnout, which offered incredible panoramic views of Lake Superior.

We then hit the Munising Falls Trail, an easy 0.4-mile walk that led us to a 50-foot waterfall. We spent some time at Sand Point Beach afterward, a hidden gem if you ask us! Just make sure to avoid July and August for your trip to Pictured Rocks, when the stable flies are out and biting on these Lake Superior beaches!

Evening: Sunset Views & Local Flavors

As the day wound down, we treated ourselves to wood-fired pizza at Pictured Rocks Pizza in Munising. The portions were generous and perfect for sharing after a day of hiking. The highlight of our evening was the Pictured Rocks Cruise, which gave us an entirely new perspective of the cliffs we'd been admiring all day (book this at least 2 weeks in advance during peak season).

We wrapped up our night at East Channel Brewing, where we sampled some local craft beers and chatted with other travelers about their weekend itinerary plans. The casual, friendly vibe made it the perfect way to end our day exploring this beautiful corner of Michigan.

Day 2: Epic Chapel Basin Loop & Waterfalls

Morning: Starting Our Day at Chapel Basin

We kicked off our day with coffee and pastries at Gallery Coffee Company in Munising. After fueling up, we headed to Chapel Basin Parking (we have pinned this location in our Michigan Google Map) to begin one of the most rewarding Pictured Rocks hikes in Michigan. The 10.2-mile loop offers incredible views throughout, and we made sure to start early with plenty of water and snacks.

Afternoon: Chasing Waterfalls and Beaches

Our first stop was Mosquito Falls, where we enjoyed a peaceful forest walk leading to a beautiful cascade tumbling over rocks. We then made our way to Mosquito Beach, a secluded spot perfect for a quick rest and some stunning Lake Superior views. The highlight was reaching Chapel Beach, where we enjoyed our packed lunch while admiring the iconic Chapel Rock formation - the 4-mile trek here became our favorite stretch in all of Michigan. Before heading back, we visited Chapel Falls, a stunning 60-foot waterfall that pours into Chapel Lake.

Evening: Local Flavors

To wrap up our epic day of hiking, we treated ourselves to authentic Michigan pasties at Miners Pasty Kitchen. These hearty, filled pastries were exactly what we needed after a full day of adventuring.

Day 3: Grand Marais Exploration & Scenic Beaches

Morning: Scenic Drive to Twelvemile Beach

We started our day with a scenic 45-minute drive from Munising to the pristine Twelvemile Beach (we have pinned this location in our Michigan Google Map). The drive itself was beautiful, winding through the forest with glimpses of Lake Superior. When we arrived at Twelvemile Beach Campground, we were thrilled to find convenient amenities like a drive-up parking lot and public restrooms - perfect for spending a full beach day.

Afternoon: Lighthouse Adventures

After our morning at the beach, we headed to Au Sable Light Station Trailhead, just 10 minutes up the road. The 3-mile trail to the lighthouse offered incredible views of Lake Superior and the surrounding cliffs. We continued to Log Slide Overlook, a fascinating spot where loggers once sent timber down to waiting ships below - definitely worth a stop for the stunning views of the dunes meeting Lake Superior. Our Pictured Rocks adventure continued with a visit to Sable Falls, where we watched the water cascade over multiple tiers before flowing into Lake Superior.

Evening: Exploring Grand Marais

We wrapped up our Michigan weekend itinerary by exploring the charming town of Grand Marais. The quaint harbor town offered the perfect mix of local shops and restaurants to end our trip. Before heading back to Munising, we grabbed dinner at one of the local spots and watched the sunset over the harbor - a perfect way to close out our three days in Pictured Rocks.
