Afternoon: Alfama District Adventures After the castle, we wandered down to Miradouro de Santa Luzia, our favorite viewpoint in Alfama. This stunning terrace features traditional blue tiles (azulejos) and gorgeous views. Our first stop was Careca , a hidden gem pastry shop that's been serving incredible croissants since 1954. We couldn't resist trying their signature croissants and Duchesse pastries with our morning espresso. Next up was the stunning Torre de Belém , a UNESCO World Heritage site along the Tagus River. This medieval tower offers amazing views of the city and waterfront. Book your €15 tickets in advance to skip the lines! To end our day, we made an amazing discovery at LX Factory , a creative hub housed in old factory buildings under the Ponte 25 Abril Bridge. We tried both Twelvemile Beach (the developed campground) and a rustic site along the Little Beaver Lake , and honestly loved them both for different reasons. At Twelvemile, we fell asleep to Lake Superior's waves and woke up to the most incredible sunrise right from our tent. The rustic camping felt more adventurous - just remember to store all food within your vehicle and never feed the wildlife. We saw so many squirrels and raccoons that weren’t afraid to come right up to our campsite after being trained that humans have food. Take a Scenic Boat Tour While we haven't taken the boat tours at Pictured Rocks yet, everyone we've talked to raves about the sunset cruise! Based on our research and conversations with other travelers, the evening tours offer stunning photo opportunities as the setting sun illuminates the colorful cliffs. From what we've heard, you'll want to snag seats on the right side of the boat for the best views, and definitely pack an extra layer - that Lake Superior breeze can get chilly! One tip that keeps coming up: book your tickets well in advance during summer months, especially for those popular sunset tours. It lasts about 2-3 hours and departs from Munising. Tickets are typically priced around $38 for adults and $10 for children. We can't wait to experience this ourselves and update this section with our firsthand adventure! 5. Beach Hop Along Lake Superior We turned beach hopping into a full-day adventure, starting at Miners Beach where the water looked like something straight out of the Caribbean (though don't let those colors fool you - it's freezing!). Twelvemile Beach became our afternoon spot - we had practically the whole stretch to ourselves. Another hidden gem near Munising that is perfect for a picnic is Sand Point Beach . Quick heads up: we learned the hard way that water shoes are a must. Those rocks can be pretty brutal on bare feet, and even in August, the water never got above 60°F. We lasted about 30 seconds in the water before running back to our beach towels! 6. Chase Waterfalls We spent an entire day hunting waterfalls and honestly, it was one of our favorite parts of the trip! Miners Falls was our first stop - a pretty easy 1.2-mile round trip that is doable for all skill levels. Chapel Falls & Spray Falls took a bit more work to reach, but the three-tier cascade and 70 foot plunge into Lake Superior was totally worth the sweaty hike (we did this 10-mile hike on a day of its own). Munising Falls ended up being our favorite though - a bit of a hidden gem on the south side of Pictured Rocks that drops 50 feet! Pro tip we learned after three visits: spring is amazing for dramatic flows, but we actually preferred early summer when you could get closer without getting soaked. Just bring bug spray - you’ll thank us later! We'd also recommend avoiding late summer altogether due to the biting stable flies! They make your adventures far less enjoyable. 7. Visit the Grand Sable Dunes After putting off the dunes for two trips, we finally made it there last summer and kicked ourselves for not going sooner! These massive sand mountains (they seriously rise 300 feet above Lake Superior) felt like we'd been transported to the Sahara. The best part? The parking lot is just a short walk from the top, not the bottom! Meaning you an enjoy those epic views without putting in the work of climbing them (although some people do descend the dunes with a risk of requiring a rescue helicopter to get back up). We timed our visit for sunrise and watched the morning light slowly illuminate the dunes and lake. Quick tip: bring a jacket no matter what time of year. Drive the Scenic Byways Justin and I spent a whole afternoon cruising the H-58, and wow - what a drive! While you can stop t places like Miners Castle and the Log Slide overlook, there are many scenic overlooks as you approach Grand Marais. Plus Grand Marais even has a brewery to celebrate the drive that we have pinned in our Michigan Google Map . We hit the jackpot timing our visit during peak fall colors in late September - the contrast between the red and yellow leaves against those blue waters was unreal. 9. Winter Adventure Activities Winter transforms Pictured Rocks into a magical wonderland of outdoor activities. You can explore snow-covered trails on snowshoes, where the landscape resembles something out of a fairy tale. The frozen waterfalls create spectacular ice formations that attract ice climbers of all skill levels (guided tours recommended). One of the most unique winter attractions is the series of ice caves that form along the lakeshore - nature's own frozen art gallery. Road Trip Around the Upper Peninsula You do not have to travel out west to explore lush nature, mountainous backdrops, and rushing waterfalls. In addition to Pictured Rocks , there are so many hidden gems in Michigan 's Upper Peninsula, it requires at least a week-long trip to explore everything. While in the Upper Peninsula, we highly recommend going on a road trip. This one week itinerary not only includes Pictured Rocks, but four additional can't miss U.P. destinations. Their most recognizable year-round brews are El Rojo (Red Ale), Mr. Blue Sky (Wheat), Haze Force (Hazy IPA), You Figure It Out (Coconut Vanilla Milk Stout), and Norm's Raggedy Ass (IPA). Norm's Raggedy Ass is their flagship ( not to mention 2010 World Beer Cup gold medal recipient ) that is a hoppy, smooth, and sweet IPA. The parking lot of the Dune Climb Trail is home to one of Sleeping Bear's largest dunes. Paterson Beach Paterson beach has two different levels of adventure. The first is by taking the 1-mile gravel road down Paterson Rd to reach the road-side parking and minimal facilities. Port Oneida Beach Port Oneida Beach is located on the southern side of the park, just past Glen Arbor and on your way to Pyramid Point Trail . Behind the fence, there is an adventurous way down to the beach requiring you to jump down a small sand dune. From here, you can kayak around Little Beaver Lake and/or take the channel on the northeast corner of the lake to access Beaver Lake. We took the channel to Beaver Lake and saw a deer crossing the water right in front of us! Access to the sandbar can be found at our map below. If visiting for the day, most people park alongside Crystal Beach Rd NW (not in front of any private residences) and access via a small public section of beach near the southern-most tip of the lake. Please be respectful when parking on Crystal Beach Rd, as well as, entering via this small section of beach as many private residents surround this area. From this access point, swim, kayak, or float the short distance out to the sandbar and enjoy one of Michigan's most beautiful lakes! At the tip of the island you will find Mission Point Lighthouse , a historic 1870's lighthouse leading down to a picturesque beach. Be sure to stop at Jolly Pumpkin Brewery while on Old Mission. Sutton's Bay Ciders - Breathtaking view of the Grand Traverse Bay! Advertisement 7. Take a Bike Ride The Leelanau Trail goes from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. The trail is 17 miles one-way and takes you through the beautiful Leelanau countryside and vineyards. We parked at the parking lot on 4th street in Suttons Bay and biked 6 miles to Shady Lane Cellars. There are 7 wineries/breweries you can visit throughout this stretch, however, all require a short distance of biking off of the trail in order to add these stops to your route. We have made a map below of all of the possible stops you can make along the way, as well as, directions to get to the wineries/breweries from the bike trail. Enjoy and bike/drive responsibly! Tip: click the star on the map below to save to your Google Maps account! If you like biking, you have to check out the Sleeping Bear Heritage Biking Trail ! The bike path is 20-miles one-way and paved with 10 feet wide asphalt paths throughout 17 miles (3 miles through the Oneida Historical District has packed stone instead of paved asphalt trail). A great place to start this bike trial is in the parking lot of the Dune Climb . Heading north and this will give you 12.3 miles of gorgeous biking through Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, Glen Haven, Glen Arbor, as well as, the scenic and famous M-22. It should take roughly an hour (without stopping at vistas) to get to the northern end of this trail at S Bohemian Rd. Plan for a 2-3 hour round trip bike ride from the Dune Climb parking lot if intending to complete the full 24.6 miles (highly recommended!). Tip: If you do not have a bike of your own or do not have the space to bring it on your trip, rent one from Crystal River Outfitters in Glen Arbor for a very affordable price! Advertisement 8. The green loops near the trailhead are perfect for warming up before tackling the more challenging blue and black sections. Midday Adventures: Active Exploration Options Swimming spots for cooling off: Torch Lake public access to the sandbar - After working up a sweat, we drove 30 minutes to Torch Lake where the Caribbean-blue waters and soft sand were absolutely perfect for a refreshing dip! The public access point was easy to find, though street parking filled up quickly on hot days. The shallow sandbar extends far into the lake, creating a unique swimming experience where you can walk hundreds of feet out while still touching the bottom. On your way back to Traverse City from Torch Lake, be sure to stop at Short’s Brewery Pull Barn Taproom in Elk Rapids. They’re known for their Soft Parade Shandy and wildly experimental beers. For a more peaceful water experience - If you're seeking tranquility rather than a vibrant social scene, we recommend renting kayaks right in downtown Traverse City and paddling along the crystal clear waters of Grand Traverse Bay and the Boardman River (rental spots pinned in our Michigan Google Map ). Afternoon Culinary Experiences: Farm-to-Table Delights We spent an incredible afternoon exploring Traverse City's renowned food scene! 🍽️ The Commons , a former state hospital turned culinary marketplace, offered us amazing local dishes with ingredients sourced directly from nearby farms (we have pinned this location in our Michigan Google Map ). You can even enjoy some crisp hard ciders and white wines while relaxing on the sunny patio of Left Foot Charley. 🍽️ For a more casual experience, we hit up Little Fleet's food truck lot where we enjoyed tacos made with locally caught whitefish while taking in views of the bay. The variety of trucks rotating throughout the season means you'll always find something new! 🍽️ We couldn't resist stopping at Gallagher's Farm Market where we picked our own cherries and sampled their famous cherry salsa and dried cherries. The u-pick experience was so much fun and gave us treats to enjoy throughout our trip! (They are open 9am-6pm everyday during the cherry season. Cherries are $3.00/lb and they accept cash or credit) 🍽️ No visit to Traverse City would be complete without exploring at least one winery. Tour Chateau Chantal on Old Mission Peninsula where you can taste award-winning wines while gazing over vineyards stretching toward the water. The passionate staff explained how the peninsula's microclimate creates perfect growing conditions for cool-climate varietals. Evening Experiences: Sunset, Ice Cream, & Breweries In the evening, you’re in for a treat! Order an ice cream flight from Moomers Homemade Ice Cream and indulge in their famous Cherries Moobilee (cherry ice cream loaded with chocolate chunks and cherries). The ice cream shop is located on an actual working dairy farm with adorable cows visible from the outdoor seating area! One of our favorite Traverse City memories was watching the sunset at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore from the Sleeping Bear Dunes Overlook (exact location in our Michigan Google Map ). The golden light reflecting off the massive dunes as the sun dipped below Lake Michigan created an absolutely breathtaking scene that we'll never forget. But don't worry, we've done all the legwork (and fudge tastings) to figure out the best spots. We made plenty of rookie mistakes so you don't have to, and now we're sharing our favorite finds as Michigan locals from this charming car-free island. In this guide, you'll discover the best times for carriage tours and biking, our top picks for fudge shops , hidden gems for photography, and insider tips for avoiding crowds. Explore Main Street of Mackinac Did we mention there are no motor vehicles allowed on the island? Pictured below is one of your three options for getting around the island: foot, bike, or horse! From the moment you step off the ferry, you will feel as though you went back in time. From the historic buildings, to the horses and buggies, to the smell of delicious baked goods, exploring Main Street is one of the top things to do on Mackinac Island. 2. Biking on Mackinac Island Grab your bike and head out on the M-185, an 8.2-mile trail that hugs the coastline and circles the island. You can bring your own bike on the ferries for about $13 extra, or rent one downtown. We rented at Mackinac Island Bike Shop , which was conveniently located near the ferry docks and had competitive pricing. Prices range from $10-16/hour and includes a basket, helmet & water! We rented a tandem bicycle and thoroughly enjoyed cruising down the M-185. Non-stop biking this trail will take roughly an hour , however, there are many sights to stop at along the M-185 that would require allotting more time. There are many Native American Cultural History Trail information plaques along the trail, as well as, beaches, Mackinac Bridge lookouts, and several hiking trails within Mackinac Island State Park. 🚴 Bike Rental: $10-16/Hour and includes a basket & helmet 3. Swimming on Mackinac Island The crystal clear waters surrounding Mackinac Island sure are enticing. After an 8.2 mile bike ride around the island on a hot summer day the waters may feel refreshing, but beware, the water is cold! Do not expect the long, white sand beaches of a tropical island. Mackinac Island beaches are rocky, yet beautiful. The best place to take a dip is at British Landing on the northern side of the island. Grab some fried pickles and/or ice cream at the below mentioned Cannonball Drive Inn and dip your toes in the beautiful blue waters that surround Mackinac Island. 🍦 J&L Tip: Grab some ice cream at the Cannonball Drive Inn! 4. Mackinac Island State Park Michigan's oldest state park, established in 1895. In fact, from 1875-1895 it was actually Mackinac National Park, the USA's second national park. Now, over 80% of the island is state park property. With natural wonders , historic sites, breathtaking vistas, and lush forests throughout, it is hard not to admire the beauty of this state park while on Mackinac Island. A beautiful way to experience the park (in addition to the M-185 bike trail) is by hiking the trails from Arch Rock to Fort Homes (both described below). 📚 Also Read: Ultimate 1 Week Upper Peninsula Itinerary 5. Arch Rock Arch rock is one of the natural wonders of Mackinac Island, made of limestone and formed by glaciers. This geological formation towers 146 feet above water and requires a short hike to get to the below pictured viewpoint. You can view Arch Rock from the M-185 bike path, however, the view from the top of the path has magnificent views of the contrasting greenery with a crystal clear water backdrop. 🤫 Congrats, you found our hidden freebie! Visit the Grand Hotel Unless you want to spend $400/night for your lodging, you may want to consider spending the night elsewhere. However, the Grand Hotel is a must-see sight! A beautiful, elegant, and historical hotel that hosts a lovely tea time if you are looking to treat yourself to a royal experience. One activity at the Grand Hotel that is completely free is taking a stroll around the grounds & gardens. Home to over 125,000 flowers with over a ton of bulbs planted annually, the Grand Hotel gardens are a must-see for any plant lover. 🌸 Fun Fact: The Grand Hotel is home to over 125,000 flowers! 7. Enjoy the view from Fort Homes, the highest location in Mackinac The Fort Homes redoubt was originally built in 1814 by British forces during the War of 1812. Its purpose was to aid in protection of the nearby Fort Mackinac in case of attack by the U.S. army. It just so happens that this fort is located at the highest point on Mackinac Island. Take a Historic Carriage Tour Starting your visit with a horse-drawn carriage tour is highly recommended - it's an excellent way to get oriented! These tours typically last about 1.5 hours and cover all the major attractions while knowledgeable guides share fascinating island history. For the best experience, book an early morning tour to avoid crowds and long wait times that are common during peak afternoon hours. 💰 Tickets start at $44/adult for the sightseeing tour 9. Indulge in World-Famous Mackinac Island Fudge You absolutely can't leave without trying some fudge - trust us, we sampled way too much "for research purposes." We loved watching the fudge makers at work through the windows on Main Street. Our favorite spot was May's Candy Shop . Reservations at Cindy's can only be made same-day in-person so make sure you stop as soon as you arrive to ensure availability. 🐴 Starting at $70 per person for a 1-hour ride. 14. Gardens and Parks Visit the stunning gardens at the Governor's Residence and Surrey Hill for impressive displays of local flora. For a peaceful break, pack a picnic and head to the centrally located Marquette Park. 15. Winter Fun While we visited in summer, the island apparently transforms into this magical winter wonderland in the off-season. You can go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or ice skating - and the best part is you'll have the place practically to yourself! Frequently Asked Questions Q: How much do Mackinac Island ferry tickets cost? A: Adult round-trip tickets typically range from $26-30, while children (5-12) are around $14-16. Children under 5 ride free. Prices may vary by season and ferry company. We recommend checking Shepler's Ferry or Star Line for current rates and booking online to save time. Q: What's the best time to visit Mackinac Island? A: Peak season runs from late June through August, offering warm weather and full services. However, we prefer early June or September for fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures. Each offer a discount when purchasing online ahead of time ($27/adult round-trip) and generally offer identical services. However, we chose to use Shepler's Ferry due to its user-friendly website, amazing customer service, and high-quality reviews. We had an amazing experience and sat on the top deck each way, which gave us excellent views of the Mackinac Bridge. We would recommend getting to the ferry dock 15-20 minutes before the ferry is scheduled to leave and plan for a 15-20 min ferry ride each way Q: How long should I stay on Mackinac Island? A: We recommend 2-3 days minimum to fully experience the island's attractions without rushing. However, you can also see the highlights as a day trip from Mackinaw City. Q: Can I camp on Mackinac Island? A: While there are no campgrounds on Mackinac Island, that doesn not mean you cannot turn this into a camping trip. We'd recommend staying at Wilderness State Park Campground , located only a 20 min drive from Mackinaw City. This is truly a hidden gem of a park with 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, 20 miles of hiking trails, and a designated dark sky preserve, meaning it is one of the best places to stargaze in Michigan. Did we mention? You can reserve a campsite right along the water! Q: Are there cars on Mackinac Island? A: No, motor vehicles are prohibited. Transportation is limited to horses, bicycles, and walking. Q: What should I pack for Mackinac Island? A: Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
